Target Background

Function
Functions as an intestinal M-cells transcytotic receptor specific of type-I-piliated bacteria that participate in the mucosal immune response toward these bacteria. At the apical membrane of M-cells binds fimH, a protein of the bacteria type I pilus tip. Internalizes bound bacteria, like E.coli and S.typhimurium, from the lumen of the intestine and delivers them, through M-cells, to the underlying organized lymphoid follicles where they are captured by antigen-presenting dendritic cells to ellicit a mucosal immune response.
Gene References into Functions
  1. GP2 is a popular secretory product released from mucous glands and secretory cells and may support defense mechanisms against pathogenic bacteria in the tubular organs open to the external milieu. PMID: 28003582
  2. GP2-expressing cells in paranasal sinuses are in the lineage of goblet cells. PMID: 25355440
  3. Tightly linked to homologue THP. A Gp2 knockout mouse was established which does express THP. PMID: 15325280
  4. unlikely that GP2 serves a major intracellular role within the acinar cell, may be active after it is secreted PMID: 15385539
  5. glycoprotein 2 (GP2), specifically expressed on the apical plasma membrane of M cells among enterocytes, serves as a transcytotic receptor for mucosal antigens PMID: 19907495
