Target Background

Function
Transcriptional regulator. Recognizes and binds to the DNA sequence 5'-GCG(T/G)GGGCG-3'(EGR-site) in the promoter region of target genes. Binds double-stranded target DNA, irrespective of the cytosine methylation status. Regulates the transcription of numerous target genes, and thereby plays an important role in regulating the response to growth factors, DNA damage, and ischemia. Plays a role in the regulation of cell survival, proliferation and cell death. Mediates responses to ischemia and hypoxia; regulates the expression of proteins that are involved in inflammatory processes. Plays a role in regulating the expression of circadian clock genes.
Gene References into Functions
  1. egr1 colocalizes with tyrosine hydroxylase in the olfactory bulb throughout brain development. PMID: 23022747
  2. successive induction of the transcription factors Runx3, Egr1 and Sox9b constitutes a regulatory cascade that controls expression of Follistatin A in pharyngeal endoderm, the latter modulating BMP signaling in developing cranial cartilage in zebrafish PMID: 23209659
  3. The cDNA coding for zebrafish Egr1 was obtained and its expression pattern was examined during zebrafish embryogenesis using whole-mount in situ hybridization PMID: 12351200
  4. Egr1 gene has important role in zebrafish embryonic oculogenesis. Lens and retina with egr1 gene deletion were primitive and lacked differentiation. Such arrested retinal and lenticular development in Egr1 morphants resulted in microphthalmos. PMID: 17110908
