Target Background

Function
Involved in the control of stem cells and sex determination in the C.elegans hermaphrodite germline. May also play a role in the hermaphrodite germline proliferation and oogenesis. Binds specifically to the regulatory region of fem-3 3'-UTR and mediates the sperm/oocyte switch. Negatively regulates gld-3 expression, possibly by directly binding to two sites within the 3'-UTR of gld-3 isoform b. In association with the cye-1/cdk-2 complex, negatively regulates gld-1 expression in the distal germline cells of the mitotic zone. By binding to the 3'-UTR, represses phosphatase lip-1 expression in the distal part of the germline mitotic zone. Suppresses germline tumor formation by preventing the dedifferentiation of secondary spermatocytes.
Gene References into Functions
  1. It was concluded that FBF1 is a key functional transition fibre component that actively facilitates the ciliary entry of assembled IFT machinery. PMID: 24231678
  2. Data show that CPB-1 (cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein homolog-1) alters the affinity of FBF (fem-3 mRNA binding factor) for specific RNA sequences. PMID: 23159558
  3. Data indicate that a 10-amino-acid region in germline development defective-3 (GLD-3) is required for fem-3 binding factor (FBF) binding, while a 7-amino-acid loop in FBF between PUF repeats 7 and 8 is necessary for GLD-3 binding. PMID: 23159559
  4. Here, the authors report that FBF/Pumilio, a conserved RNA-binding protein, promotes self-renewal of germline stem cells by repressing CKI-2(Cip/Kip), a Cyclin E/Cdk2 inhibitor. PMID: 21822213
  5. The Puf RNA-binding proteins FBF-1 and FBF-2 inhibit the expression of synaptonemal complex proteins in germline stem cells. PMID: 20431119
  6. fbf-1 regulates the size of the mitotic region in helminth germ cells. PMID: 15525531
  7. FBF may coordinately repress sperm-specifying mRNAs to direct oogenesis and it represses the fog-1 mRNA to maintain FOG-1 at a low level appropriate for proliferation PMID: 16000383
  8. all fbf-1 puf-8 double mutants fail in the hermaphrodite sperm/oocyte switch PMID: 16037210
  9. A structural distortion in the central region of FBF imposes the requirement for an additional nucleotide to effect messenger RNA binding, thus defining its specificity. PMID: 16244662
  10. Fbf-1 redundantly inhibits primary vulval cell fate specification in two distinct pathways acting in the soma and in the germline PMID: 16908630
  11. Results show that the RNA-binding PUF protein FBF-1 is required in the adult olfactory sensory neurons of C. elegans for adaptation. PMID: 19146813
