Target Background

Function
Insulin decreases blood glucose concentration. It increases cell permeability to monosaccharides, amino acids and fatty acids. It accelerates glycolysis, the pentose phosphate cycle, and glycogen synthesis in liver.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Temporal and spatial expression of two insulin genes (insa and insab) during early developmental stages. PMID: 16849636
  2. These findings suggest that GHRL regulates INS synthesis by mediating its action on growth hormone secretagogue-receptor in the central nervous system and partly involved in carbohydrate-glycogen metabolism. PMID: 20138234
  3. Our results indicate that in adult tilapia insulin expression is not restricted to the endocrine pancreatic cells, but also occurs in endocrine cells of the pituitary gland and in the neuronal cells of the brain. PMID: 17196948
Subcellular Location
Secreted.
