Target Background

Function
(From Uniprot)
Renin is a highly specific endopeptidase, whose only known function is to generate angiotensin I from angiotensinogen in the plasma, initiating a cascade of reactions that produce an elevation of blood pressure and increased sodium retention by the kidney.
Gene References into Functions
  1. This study reveals that the human renin protein is able to complement the mouse Ren1d(-/-) non-granulated defect and suggests that granulopoiesis requires a structural motif that is conserved between the mouse Ren1d and human renin proteins. PMID: 29123029
  2. These observations demonstrate that activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) promotes colitis in a blood pressure independent manner. Angiotensin II appears to drive colonic mucosal inflammation by promoting intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis and mucosal TH17 responses in colitis development. PMID: 27271344
  3. Mice homozygous for the Ren1c gene disruption (Ren1c-/-) display several morphological and physiological abnormalities, including poorly developed renal medulla, papillary atrophy, hydronephrosis, inability to concentrate the urine, polyuria, polydipsia, renal failure, and anemia. PMID: 28533331
  4. renin inhibition with aliskiren leads to improved ischemia-induced neovascularization that is not dependant on blood pressure lowering PMID: 26295797
  5. Calcineurin inhibitors induce production of renin in the collecting ducts that may contribute to decreased renal blood flow and increased VEGF production. PMID: 26502369
  6. AKR1B7 is expressed within the renin cell throughout development and perturbations to homeostasis, and AKR1B7 is regulated by cAMP levels within the renin cell. PMID: 26180185
