Target Background

Function
Mitochondrial intermembrane chaperone that participates in the import and insertion of multi-pass transmembrane proteins into the mitochondrial inner membrane. May also be required for the transfer of beta-barrel precursors from the TOM complex to the sorting and assembly machinery (SAM complex) of the outer membrane. Acts as a chaperone-like protein that protects the hydrophobic precursors from aggregation and guide them through the mitochondrial intermembrane space.
Gene References into Functions
  1. in gastric cancer patients, a borderline association was found between overexpression of TIMM9 and vascular invasion; patients with high expression levels of TIMM9 achieved a significantly lower disease-free survival rate compared with those with low expression levels PMID: 27720672
Subcellular Location
Mitochondrion inner membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Intermembrane side.
Protein Families
Small Tim family
Tissue Specificity
Ubiquitous, with highest expression in heart, kidney, liver and skeletal muscle.
