Target Background

Function
Involved in mRNA degradation. Hydrolyzes single-stranded polyribonucleotides processively in the 3' to 5' direction. RNases 2 and R (rnr) contribute to rRNA degradation during starvation, while RNase R and PNPase (pnp) are the major contributors to quality control of rRNA during steady state growth. This RNase is required to decrease expression of RNase PH (rnp) at 42 degrees Celsius during starvation, which in turn represses rRNA degradation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Reversible acetylation on Lys501 regulates the activity of RNase II. PMID: 26847092
  2. We determined that the deletion of RNase II significantly affected 187 transcripts, while deletion of RNase R affects 202 transcripts and deletion of PNPase affected 226 transcripts PMID: 25757888
  3. Data show that RNase II is associated with all of the known degradosome proteins. PMID: 25299745
  4. Data indicate that membrane association and self-interactions are both required for the RNase II cellular organization. PMID: 23344958
  5. A functionl characterization of three different domains assigned to the Escherichia coli RNase II - two RNA-binding domains at each end of the protein (CSD and S1), and a central RNB catalytic domain - was performed PMID: 16806266
  6. The crystal structure of E. coli RNase II reveals an architecture reminiscent of the RNA exosome. PMID: 16996291
  7. The authors propose that RNase II degrades mRNA to the downstream border of paused ribosomes, facilitating cleavage of the A-site codon by an unknown RNase. PMID: 19627501
