L1cam

Neural cell adhesion molecule L1(L1CAM), also known as CD171, is a cell adhesion receptor, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Originally discovered in the human brain, L1CAM plays an important role in the initiation and development of the nervous system by regulating cell-to-cell adhesion, including axonal growth and migration. Later, it was found that L1CAM protein is also highly expressed in malignant tumors originating from neural tissue, epithelial or mesothelial tissue and other tissues, such as non-small cell lung cancer, glioma, ovarian cancer, thyroid cancer, melanoma, gastric cancer, etc., and play an important role in tumor cell proliferation, infiltration, metastasis, anti-apoptosis and angiogenesis.

In the early stage of tumorigenesis, the expression of L1CAM is less, and it mainly exerts the function of adhesion between cells, which makes the tumor localized growth. As the tumor progresses, the expression of L1CAM can induce the expression of more adhesion molecules and adhesion molecule receptors, and activate the subsequent adhesion mechanism and signal transduction, thereby promoting tumor invasion and metastasis. At present, the detection of L1CAM protein has become a marker for evaluating the malignancy and prognosis of various tumors such as ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and melanoma.
