ACVR1

ACVR1 encodes the activin A receptor type 1 protein, also known as ALK - 2. This protein is a serine/threonine kinase receptor that binds activin ligands. It functions in various signaling pathways, mainly the TGF - β superfamily pathway. Upon ligand binding, it activates downstream Smad proteins, regulating cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis.
Mutations in ACVR1 are associated with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare and severely disabling genetic disorder characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification. Currently, research is ongoing to develop drugs that can target ACVR1 and its signaling pathway, aiming to find effective treatments for FOP and other related conditions.
