ULBP1

UL16-binding protein-1 (ULBP1), also known as NKG2DL, is a member of the ULBPs family and one of the ligands of NKG2D. NKG2D is an activating receptor expressed on immune effector cells, which can recognize different MHC-I related molecules (such as MHCA, MHCB) and another MHC-I related molecule ULBPs. These ligands are uncommon in normal cells, and their expression is induced under conditions such as viral infection and malignant transformation of tumors. ULBP1 ligands activate NKG2D receptors on natural killer cells (NK) and CD8+ T cells, thereby triggering immune killing. The researchers found that the high expression of ULBP1 in peripheral blood exosomes of patients with preeclampsia (PE) may provide a basis for the diagnosis and treatment of PE. In addition, relevant experimental data indicate that ULBP1 is abundantly expressed in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). And the expression of NKG2D receptor and ULBP1 is closely related to the existence of HCC inflammatory cells. Another study suggested that early recurrence after hepatectomy was closely related to the loss of ULBP1 expression. Therefore, ULBP1 is expected to be a molecular target for HCC immunotherapy.
