IGF1R Background

The insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor is a protein in humans that is encoded by the IGF1R gene. The IGF1R protein is a receptor tyrosine kinase that mediates the actions of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1). It binds IGF1 with high affinity and IGF2 and insulin (INS) with a lower affinity. The activated IGF1R is involved in cell growth and survival control. IGF1R is crucial for tumor transformation and survival of the malignant cell. IGF-1 plays an important role in the growth and continues to have anabolic effects in adults – meaning that it can induce hypertrophy of and other target tissues. Mice lacking the IGF-1 receptor died late in development, and exhibited a dramatic reduction in body mass, testifying to the strong growth-promoting effect of this receptor.
