HBE1, or the ε-bead protein gene, is a gene that encodes the ε-chain of haemoglobin. It is located on human chromosome 11 and is part of the haemoglobin gene cluster. The ε-chain expressed by the HBE1 gene forms specialised haemoglobins, such as Hb Gower 1 and Hb Gower 2, during early embryonic development, which are important for oxygen transport and metabolism in the embryo. As the foetus grows, expression of the ε-chain is gradually replaced by the γ-chain (encoded by the HBG1 and HBG2 genes) to form the foetal haemoglobin HbF. Mutations in or aberrant expression of the HBE1 gene have been associated with certain types of thalassaemia, an inherited disorder that affects haemoglobin synthesis and function. Thus, HBE1 is biologically important in embryonic development, oxygen transport, and the development of related blood disorders.
