PIEZO2 encodes the Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 2 protein. Also known as FAM38B, it is a key mechanosensitive ion channel. It functions by opening in response to mechanical forces, allowing the influx of cations and initiating electrical signals. Piezo2 is involved in the TRPV4 pathway, which plays a crucial role in mechanotransduction.
Abnormalities of PIEZO2 are related to distal arthrogryposis and Gordon syndrome. In terms of drug development, although currently there are no approved drugs specifically targeting Piezo2, research is underway to explore its potential as a therapeutic target for neurological and musculoskeletal diseases.
