SLC19A1, solute carrier family 19 member 1, alias RFC1. This is a transporter protein expressed in human cells that is primarily responsible for the transmembrane transport of folate and other related molecules such as cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) across membranes into the cell.
The mechanism of action of SLC19A1 involves the active transport of folic acid and antifolate drugs with folic acid and in this way it plays a key role in the maintenance of intracellular folic acid levels and the regulating immune responses. In addition, SLC19A1 is involved in the DNA-sensing pathway, which activates the STING pathway through the translocation of 2'3'-cGAMP, which in turn induces an immune response.
Abnormalities in the function of SLC19A1 have been associated with a wide range of disorders, including neural tube defects, megaloblastic anemia, certain cancers, and autoimmune disorders, and are potential targets for drug discovery and disease treatment.
