TARBP1, also known as Probable methyltransferase TARBP1, TAR (HIV-1) RNA binding protein 1, TAR, TAR RNA loop binding protein, and TAR RNA-binding protein 1, is a protein encoded by the TARBP1 gene. It is primarily expressed in various tissues, including lymph nodes and prostate. The mechanism of action for TARBP1 involves binding to HIV-1 TAR RNA, potentially playing a role in the regulation of HIV-1 gene expression. Additionally, TARBP1 may be involved in the processing and metabolism of other cellular RNAs.
Abnormal expression of TARBP1 is associated with various diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and liver diseases. For example, overexpression of TARBP1 has been observed in hepatocellular carcinoma and is associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, TARBP1 is a potential target in disease research and therapy.
