ADCYAP1, adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 1, alias PACAP. It is encoded by the human ADCYAP1 gene, which is located on chromosome 18. ADCYAP1 encodes a secreted prophylactic protein, which is further processed into multiple mature peptides, which stimulate adenylate cyclase and increase the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), leading to transcriptional activation of the target gene.
ADCYAP1 is a key mediator of the neuroendocrine stress response and possesses a variety of biological activities, including the functions of promoting pituitary hormone secretion, improving reproductive performance, and enhancing immunity in animals, and is mainly distributed in the nervous system and gastrointestinal tissues.
