ALDH3A2, a member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 3 family A2, is a protein-coding gene located on human chromosome 17. This gene produces an enzyme that facilitates the conversion of long-chain fatty aldehydes into fatty acids, a process critical for sustaining intracellular lipid metabolism and detoxifying harmful aldehydes. ALDH3A2 is prominently expressed in various tissues, with particularly high levels in the skin and adrenal glands. Mutations in the ALDH3A2 gene can result in Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, a rare genetic condition characterized by skin, nervous system, and eye abnormalities.
