The BATF protein, full name Basic Leucine Zipper ATF-Like Transcription Factor, belongs to the bZIP transcription factor family. Common aliases include ATF3-Like 1. It forms heterodimers with JUN proteins to bind AP-1 motifs in target gene promoters, regulating cytokines like IL-2 and IL-17. BATF acts downstream of MAPK and NF-κB pathways, critical for Th17 and Tfh cell differentiation.
Dysregulated BATF is associated with autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis) via excessive inflammation, and lymphomas (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma) by driving proliferation. Preclinical research explores BATF inhibitors (small molecules, siRNA) for these conditions, though no approved drugs exist yet.
