BTN2A1, or butyrophilin subfamily 2 member A1, alias BTF1, BT2.1, BTN2.1, DJ3E1.1, BK14H9.1, etc., is encoded by the human BTN2A1 gene, which is located on chromosome 6 in the region of p22.2. The protein encoded by BTN2A1 belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, which is an integrated plasma membrane protein involved in lipid, fatty acid and sterol metabolism.
BTN2A1 forms a heterodimer with BTN3A1, which interacts with BTN3A1 through its IgV structural domain, and participates in the activation of γδ T cells, especially playing a key role in the recognition of phosphoantigens by Vγ9Vδ2 T cells.
BTN2A1 plays an important role in the immune response, and its variants may be associated with disease states, such as the metabolic syndrome. BTN2A1 is also believed to be a key player in the immunological response of Vγ 9Vδ2T cells as a novel target associated with anti-tumor immune responses.
