CLOCK, alias BMAL1, NPAS2.CLOCK is encoded by the human CLOCK gene, which is located in the q21.3 region of chromosome IV.
CLOCK is a transcription factor that forms a heterodimer with BMAL1 (Brainand muscle ARNT-like1), which together activate downstream cyclic genes and BMAL1's own expression to maintain circadian rhythms. CLOCK binds to BMAL1, recognizes and binds to the E-box elements of target genes, and promotes transcription of these genes.
CLOCK is important for regulating circadian rhythms, sleep-wake cycles, metabolism, and behavioral responses in organisms. Aberrant CLOCK expression is associated with a variety of physiological and pathological states, including sleep disorders, metabolic syndrome, and certain neurodegenerative diseases.
