ERVK13-1, a component of the endogenous retrovirus K13 and a long-chain non-coding RNA (lincRNA), is an evolutionary remnant of viral integration within the human genome. This lincRNA exerts its influence in cancers by interacting with specific microRNAs (miRNAs); for instance, it binds to miR-873-5p, which in turn regulates the expression of the downstream gene GNMT. This interaction impacts cancer cell behaviors such as proliferation, invasion, survival, spheroid formation, and drug resistance. In the context of bladder cancer, ERVK13-1 enhances the metastatic potential of cancer cells through the modulation of GNMT, positioning it as a potential therapeutic target in cancer treatment.
