FAT1 encodes the FAT atypical cadherin 1 protein, also known as Drosophila fat homolog 1. It is a large transmembrane protein functioning as a tumor suppressor. FAT1 is involved in the Hippo signaling pathway, regulating cell proliferation and contact inhibition. Dysregulation of FAT1 has been linked to various cancers, including melanoma and gastric cancer.
Regarding drug development, current research focuses on targeting the FAT1 - Hippo pathway interaction to develop novel cancer therapies. Although there are no approved drugs specifically targeting FAT1 yet, pre - clinical studies show potential in modulating its function for cancer treatment.
