GABRA1

GABRA1, the gene for the alpha-1 subunit of the GABAA receptor on chromosome 5, is a key player in the central nervous system, where it forms a chloride channel crucial for neuronal signaling. By binding to GABA, GABRA1 controls chloride channel opening, causing hyperpolarization of the neuron's membrane and thus decreasing neuronal excitability, which results in inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. This gene is integral to managing the nervous system's excitability and is essential for its normal functioning. Mutations in GABRA1 are linked to various epilepsy types, such as juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and childhood absence epilepsy, making it a significant target for research into epilepsy and related conditions.
