GIP, or glucose-dependent insulin-releasing polypeptide, is an incretin hormone secreted by intestinal K cells. It plays a vital role in insulin secretion regulation postprandially. GIP's mechanisms include binding to its receptor and activating signaling pathways that stimulate insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner and promote glucagon secretion by islet α cells. GIP contributes to blood glucose regulation and may influence feeding behavior and cognition through the central nervous system, offering cardiovascular protection. However, its insulinotropic effect may be compromised in type 2 diabetes, though glycemic control improvements can restore GIP's regulatory effects.
