KIF18A

KIF18A, also known as CD319, is a member of the kinesin-8 subgroup within the kinesin protein family. This 100 kDa protein, composed of 898 amino acids, is predominantly located in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Functioning as a microtubule motor, KIF18A uses ATP hydrolysis to move towards the plus end of microtubules, regulating their dynamic instability and exhibiting depolymerase-like activity, which is essential for maintaining chromosome stability and proper alignment during mitosis. KIF18A dysfunction is associated with cellular transformation, which can lead to the development of cancer. High expression levels of KIF18A have been observed in multiple cancer types. It has been linked to patient prognosis, particularly in breast, clear cell renal, and colon cancers. KIF18A protein also contributes to the invasiveness and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma and is correlated with cell proliferation and tumor stage across various malignancies. Given these associations, KIF18A is emerging as a significant prognostic biomarker for cancer and a potential target for the development of therapeutic strategies.
