LTA

LTA, also known as LT, TNF-β, TNFSF1, is an important mediator in inflammatory and immune responses. It belongs to the TNF superfamily of ligands and transmits signals through both TNFRSF1A and TNFRSF1B receptors. Lymphotoxin (LTA) was discovered in the late 1960s, and attracted widespread attention because of its biological activities such as anti-tumor and anti-virus and lower toxic and side effects than TNF-α.

LTA can be secreted by myeloid cells, non-hematopoietic cells, B cells in resting state, and activated T lymphocytes. LTA is involved in the regulation of multiple biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, coagulation, and neurotransmission. LTA is secreted as a soluble polypeptide but can form heterotrimers with β-lymphotoxin (LTB), which can effectively anchor LTA to the cell surface. LTA is cytotoxic to a wide range of tumor cells.
