LYZ

LYZ, also known as lysozyme, is a small antimicrobial enzyme abundant in mucosal secretions, tears, saliva and immune cells. It breaks down bacterial cell walls by hydrolyzing peptidoglycan, providing frontline innate immune defense against invading pathogens.
Abnormal LYZ expression or mutations are associated with amyloidosis, chronic inflammatory diseases and certain infections. Recombinant and modified lysozyme formulations are under preclinical study as novel antibacterial agents, especially for drug-resistant bacterial infections and mucosal inflammatory disorders.
