MARS1, methylthionyl-tRNA synthetase 1, is also known as MRS, ILLD, MARS, TTD9, CMT2U, ILFS2, METRS, MTRNS, and SPG70. It is an enzyme encoded by the human MARS1 gene, and belongs to the family of methylthionyl-tRNA synthetases, which play a key role in protein biosynthesis by attaching the corresponding amino acids to tRNA molecules.
The mechanism of action of MARS1 is to act as a component of the multi-tRNA synthetase complex, catalyzing the attachment of methionine to tRNAs. MARS1 plays an essential role in protein synthesis, and its activity is critical for cell growth and division.
Abnormal expression or loss of function of MARS1 has been associated with a variety of disorders, including type 2 axonal peroneal muscular dystrophy, interstitial lung disease and liver disease, as well as other multi-systemic diseases, such as severe diseases with onset in infancy or early childhood, manifested by interstitial lung disease, alveolar protein deposition, cholestasis, hepatic steatosis, and iron deposition, etc. MARS1 is an important target for the study and treatment of related genetic diseases.
