SFTPD

SFTPD, known as pulmonary surfactant protein D or SP-D, is a crucial member of the collagen lectin family, predominantly found in alveolar lining cells and also expressed in cardiac smooth muscle and endothelial cells. This protein is detectable in serum, plasma, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and amniotic fluid. SFTPD contributes to immune function by binding neutrophil defensins, regulating antiviral responses, and participating in innate immunity. It facilitates pathogen recognition and phagocytosis, while also modulating inflammatory reactions to protect lung homeostasis. Abnormal SFTPD expression is associated with the development of pulmonary diseases such as asthma, various pulmonary conditions, respiratory syncytial virus infection, and rhinitis, highlighting its role in respiratory immunity and health.
