SLC10A2

SLC10A2, also known as solute carrier family 10 member 2, is alternatively named ASBT, IBAT, and ISBT. SLC10A2 is primarily expressed in the apical membrane of ileal cells, responsible for transporting bile acids from the lumen into the intestinal cells, serving as a key transporter in the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids.
SLC10A2 participates in the transport of bile acids and bile salts, located in the apical plasma membrane and nucleus, and is part of the proteasome complex. SLC10A2 plays a crucial role in maintaining the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, cholesterol homeostasis, and intestinal motility. Functional abnormalities can lead to diseases associated with disorders of the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids and cholesterol homeostasis, such as diarrhea, gallstones, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, Alagille syndrome, familial hypertriglyceridemia, congenital chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
