SV2A, synaptic vesicle protein 2A, is a membrane protein that is specifically expressed in neurons of the central nervous system.SV2A acts mainly on synaptic vesicles and is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter release and vesicular recycling processes, which are essential for the maintenance of synaptic function. Its mechanism of action involves interactions with the Ca2+-sensitive protein synaptotagmin-1 and possibly ATP-binding and transport functions that affect the probability of transmitter release from the presynaptic membrane and the size of the vesicle preparation release pool.SV2A may also be a target of antiepileptic drugs such as levetiracetam, which affects excitatory homeostasis in the nervous system by regulating neurotransmitter release.
