TRIM28

TRIM28, also known as Tripartite Motif Containing 28, and by other names such as TIF1-beta, E3 SUMO-protein Ligase TRIM28, KRAB-Associated Protein 1, KAP-1, KRAB-Interacting Protein 1, KRIP-1, and Nuclear Corepressor KAP-1, is a protein encoded by the TRIM28 gene. It is a member of the TRIM protein family and primarily functions within the cell nucleus. TRIM28 is involved in multiple biological processes, including transcriptional regulation, cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. TRIM28 interacts with various proteins, such as nuclear receptors and histone-modifying enzymes, to regulate gene expression. TRIM28 participates in the modulation of several signaling pathways, including interactions with estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and progesterone receptor (PR), which play roles in uterine function.

The expression of TRIM28 is crucial for maintaining the pluripotency and epigenetic stability of stem cells, and in adults, TRIM28 is also involved in regulating T-cell activation, muscle growth, and adipocyte lipogenesis. Furthermore, dysfunctions in TRIM28 are associated with certain diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, making TRIM28 a potential target for drug development and therapeutic interventions.
