ACSL6

ACSL6, or long-chain Acyl-CoA synthetase 6, is an enzyme predominantly found in the brain, bone marrow, and muscle tissue. This enzyme is responsible for converting long-chain fatty acids into acyl-CoA, a process that is essential for the synthesis of cell membrane phospholipids and the generation of energy through β-oxidation. ACSL6 exhibits a particular affinity for fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is vital for sustaining DHA levels in the retina and brain. It plays a crucial role in regulating fatty acid metabolism and distribution, thereby influencing cellular structure and function. Especially in the nervous system, ACSL6 is instrumental in preserving the function and survival of retinal photoreceptors. Furthermore, the expression of ACSL6 is often reduced in various types of cancer, with the exception of colorectal cancer, where its downregulation may be linked to tumorigenesis and progression, potentially offering a significant biomarker and therapeutic target for precision cancer treatment.
