ADH1B

Alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (class I, beta polypeptide) is a core enzyme in ethanol metabolism, catalyzing ethanol oxidation to acetaldehyde with NAD+ as a cofactor. Common aliases include ADH2, ADH-B, and beta-ADH. Genetic variants like ADH1B*2 (Arg48His) enhance enzyme activity, accelerating acetaldehyde production and lowering alcohol consumption risk in carriers.
Aberrant ADH1B function or variants associate with alcohol use disorder (AUD), liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, and acetaldehyde-driven cancers (esophageal, oral). Direct inhibitors are in preclinical research to mitigate toxicity, while variants guide personalized AUD management. Existing therapies like disulfiram target downstream ALDH to amplify acetaldehyde deterrence.

Immunofluorescence staining of HepG2 cells with CSB-PA001354HA01HU at 1:166, counter-stained with DAPI. The cells were fixed in 4% formaldehyde, permeabilized using 0.2% Triton X-100 and blocked in 10% normal Goat Serum. The cells were then incubated with the antibody overnight at 4°C. The secondary antibody was Alexa Fluor 488-congugated AffiniPure Goat Anti-Rabbit IgG(H+L).
