AFM, also known as afamin, is a member of the albumin gene family. It is also sometimes referred to as vitamin E-binding protein. AFM binds to vitamin E and transports it in the circulation. It plays a role in antioxidant defense and cellular protection. It is involved in the PI3K - AKT signaling pathway, which regulates cell growth, survival, and metabolism.
Dysregulation of AFM has been linked to various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. In drug development, there is growing interest in targeting AFM for therapeutic purposes. Researchers are exploring agents that can modulate AFM function to prevent or treat associated diseases, though significant work remains to translate these concepts into viable drugs.
