B6R, a monkeypox virus protein, is an extracellular envelope virus particle membrane protein that is conserved among different orthopoxviruses. It is analogous to the cowpox virus complement control protein B5, participating in the negative regulation of complement activation. B6R blocks complement activation and mitigates inflammatory responses by binding to complement components C3 and C1q, thus reducing the production of pro-inflammatory chemokines. This protein aids the monkeypox virus in evading the host's immune defenses, facilitating viral spread and infection. B6R is an important target for vaccine development and antiviral research.
