BCHE, or butyrylcholine esterase, alias Butyrylcholine esterase, CHE1, is an alpha-glycoprotein widely distributed in various tissues of the human body, and is synthesised mainly in the liver and released into the plasma. It is a non-specific esterase with a variety of biological functions, including hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and involvement in lipid metabolism.BChE plays an important role in a variety of human diseases, particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD), where changes in its levels are highly correlated with the progression of the disease. The mechanism of action of BChE involves its hydrolytic activity, which is capable of breaking down acetylcholine, thereby modulating neurotransmitter levels.
In addition, BChE shows lipolytic activity and may be involved in lipid metabolism by hydrolysing lipids such as 4-methylumbelliferyl palmitate. In terms of signalling pathways, BChE shares similar catalytic activity sites and structural features with acetylcholinesterase (AChE), but BChE has a larger binding pocket and is able to bind larger ligands. This property makes BChE biologically unique in regulating neurotransmitter levels and lipid metabolism, especially in the onset and progression of neurological diseases.
