CIDEB

The CIDEB gene encodes the cell death-inducing DFFA-like effector B protein, a crucial regulator of lipid droplet (LD) homeostasis. Also known as CIDE-3, this protein localizes to LD-LD contact sites, promoting LD fusion and growth through interactions with perilipins and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL). It modulates lipid storage and breakdown by enhancing triglyceride accumulation in hepatocytes and adipocytes.
CIDEB functions in metabolic pathways including hepatic lipid metabolism and insulin signaling. Dysregulation is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Preclinical studies explore CIDEB inhibitors to reduce hepatic steatosis, while agonists are investigated for improving lipid utilization in metabolic disorders, though clinical development remains early-stage.
