GPC1

GPC1 is a molecule on the cell surface that has a protein core with heparan sulfate chains attached to it. GPC1 is anchored to the cell membrane by a structure called glycosylphosphatidylinositol, making GPC1 part of the glypican family of proteins that are integrated into the cell membrane. GPC1 is important for controlling how certain signaling pathways work, including those for growth factors like FGF, VEGF-A, TGF-β, Wnt, Hh, and BMP. GPC1 does this by interacting with the pathways' ligands and receptors, either activating or inhibiting them. This protein is crucial for regulating cell division and growth and plays a role in the development of organisms. Moreover, GPC1 levels are often much higher in many types of cancer, such as pancreatic and breast cancer, suggesting that GPC1 could be used as a biomarker to detect cancer and might be a target for developing new treatments.
