IL6R

IL6R, also known as Interleukin-6 receptor subunit alpha, Membrane glycoprotein 80, or MGC30256, is a protein encoded by the IL6R gene. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is primarily expressed on the surfaces of cells such as liver cells, macrophages, and T cells. The mechanism of action for IL6R involves binding to interleukin-6 (IL-6), forming an IL-6/IL-6R complex, which then associates with the signal transduction protein gp130. This interaction activates downstream signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT, MAPK, and PI3K, which are involved in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses.

IL6R is involved in various physiological processes, including immune response, inflammation, hematopoiesis, and metabolism. Changes in IL6R expression levels are observed in several diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and multiple myeloma, making IL6R an important target for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Binding of IL-6 to its receptor can regulate the differentiation of B cells and T cells, promote the production of acute phase proteins by liver cells, and affect the differentiation of neural cells, playing a critical role in maintaining homeostasis and defense mechanisms in the body.
