LYZL4, also known as lysozyme-like protein 4, has alternative names including LYC4 and LYZA. LYZL4 belongs to the C-type lysozyme superfamily and exhibits predicted lysozyme activity. It participates in the fertilization process and is expressed in the acrosome vesicles, extracellular space, and sperm flagella. LYZL4 plays a role in the fusion of sperm and egg, as well as in sperm protection and oocyte-egg union. It can also bind hyaluronic acid and remove free radicals. LYZL4 exerts protective functions in host defense and is crucial for sperm function and fertilization. Additionally, it may play a role in Alzheimers disease by promoting the clearance of β-amyloid (Aβ).
