NEUROG3, also known as neurogenin 3, Atoh5, NGN-3, Math4B, and bHLHa7, is a transcription factor of the basic helical-loop-helix (bHLH) family, involved in neural development and the differentiation of endocrine cells. NEUROG3 activates DNA binding transcription activator activity by specifically binding to RNA polymerase II and double-stranded DNA, participating in the development of the central nervous system, positively regulating neuronal differentiation, and controlling DNA template transcription. NEUROG3 is crucial for the development and differentiation of pancreatic endocrine cells and is considered a key regulatory factor in the differentiation of pancreatic progenitor cells into endocrine cells. Mutations in NEUROG3 are associated with various diseases, including congenital malabsorption diarrhea 4, glucose intolerance, and type 2 diabetes.
