NFS1

NFS1, or cysteine desulfurase, also known as NIFS, IscS, COXPD52, or HUSSY-08, is an enzyme encoded by a human gene and belongs to the V class of pyridoxal phosphate-dependent aminotransferases. NFS1 plays a crucial role in iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis by removing sulfur from cysteine and producing alanine in the process, providing inorganic sulfur for iron-sulfur clusters. NFS1 is essential for maintaining the function of various cellular enzymes that require iron-sulfur clusters to operate properly. Abnormalities in NFS1 may lead to certain genetic diseases, such as combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency (COXPD).
