PABPC1

PABPC1 (polyadenylate-binding protein cytoplasmic 1), also known as PABP1 or PABPC, is a core cytoplasmic protein that binds to the 3' poly(A) tail of eukaryotic mRNAs. It interacts with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4G (eIF4G) to circularize mRNA molecules, enhancing translation initiation efficiency and stabilizing transcripts to prevent degradation.
Abnormal PABPC1 expression links to breast and lung cancers—its overexpression drives tumor proliferation via regulating oncogenic mRNA translation. It also correlates with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s, where dysregulation disrupts mRNA homeostasis. Preclinical studies are exploring inhibitors targeting PABPC1-mediated pathways for cancer therapy.
