PRNP

PRNP, the prion protein precursor, is encoded by the PRNP gene and is particularly prevalent in the central nervous system. Its normal form, PrPC, is involved in cell adhesion and signal transduction. However, misfolding into PrPSc can lead to the formation of amyloid fibrils and nerve cell damage. PRNP's significance lies in its association with neurodegenerative diseases, especially prion diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which are caused by the abnormal aggregation of PrPSc.
