PRTN3

The PRTN3 gene, found on chromosome 19, encodes protease 3, a serine protease crucial for neutrophil function. This enzyme regulates inflammation by degrading tissue proteins and processing cytokines and receptors. It contributes to immune signaling, affects dendritic cell maturation, and plays a part in the extracellular domain proteolysis of membrane proteins and the migration of neutrophils. Associated with conditions such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis, PRTN3 also holds promise in cancer immunotherapy by potentially activating cytotoxic immune cells like NK cells and CD8+ T cells when its enzyme activity is inhibited, thus bolstering the body's tumor-fighting capabilities.
