SLC5A1, solute carrier family 5 member 1, is a glucose transport protein expressed in several tissues of the human body. It is expressed mainly in the small intestine and renal proximal tubule S3 segments and is responsible for the reabsorption of food-derived glucose in the intestine and residual glucose in primary urine, and functions as a water channel. The mechanism of action of SLC5A1 involves glucose transport via a sodium-dependent manner, a process that is essential for maintaining glucose homeostasis in the body. In terms of signalling, the function of SLC5A1 is associated with a variety of intracellular signalling pathways, including the mTORC1 signalling pathway, which plays a role in cell growth and proliferation. Biologically, SLC5A1 not only plays a key role in glucose uptake and energy metabolism, but may also affect cellular redox state and proliferative signalling, with important implications for human health and disease development.
