TNFSF13B is a gene providing an instruction of making a protein named tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 13B (also abbreviated as TNFSF13B). This protein is plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of B cells. It also influences antibody class switch. TNFSF13B is involved in the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases.
TNFSF13B protein, also known as BAFF, is a cytokine that binds to TNFRSF13B (also called TACI), TNFRSF17 (also known as BCMA) and TNFRSF13C (also called BAFF-R). These receptors have differing binding affinities for BAFF and are expressed mainly on mature B lymphocytes, and their expression varies in dependence of B cell maturation. BAFF, acting via TACI, have a regulatory effect on antibody production. Interaction between BAFF and BCMA promotes B cell survival, maturation, and differentiation. Acting via BAFF-R, BAFF-BAFF-R activates classical and noncanonical NF-κB signaling pathways, triggering signals essential for the formation and maintenance of B cell, thus it is important for a B-cell survival.
