UTP15 encodes the UTP15 small subunit processome component, also known as U3 snoRNP-associated protein 15. It is a core member of the 90S pre-ribosomal particle, mediating 18S rRNA processing during small ribosomal subunit biogenesis. This protein interacts with UTP family partners and snoRNAs to drive early pre-rRNA cleavage, with its activity regulated by the mTOR pathway linking ribosome synthesis to cell growth signals.
Dysregulated UTP15 expression correlates with colorectal and lung cancers, where overexpression enhances cell proliferation and tumor progression. Currently, no targeted drugs against UTP15 are in clinical trials, but preclinical research explores inhibiting its processome interactions as a potential therapeutic strategy for ribosome biogenesis-dependent malignancies.
