VIP

The VIP gene encodes Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide, also commonly known as PHM-27. This peptide is a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. It exerts its effects mainly through binding to specific G - protein - coupled receptors. It is involved in the cAMP - dependent signal pathway, which regulates various physiological processes such as smooth muscle relaxation and immune response.
VIP is associated with multiple diseases. For instance, abnormal VIP levels are linked to irritable bowel syndrome and some autoimmune disorders. In drug development, efforts are underway to design VIP analogs with enhanced stability and receptor selectivity for potential therapeutic applications in treating these associated diseases.
